Upon inspection it looks like a stick got in the spokes and helped to rip the derailleur off. No idea how that could have happened. We were on a "b" road, there was not a tree for at least a city block in any direction, there was no problem with the chainand I was not shifting. It just went BAM! No warning.

That sucks dude. Was it that B road right before I saw you? I think there was some washed up sticks/corn stalks in there.
Yeah, that was the road. Yeah, maybe a corn stalk took me out? That would seem to make sense. Damn Iowa. You saw me when I was in the process of trying to get my bike in operable condition.
